How to Upload Old Home Videos to YouTube for Private Family Sharing

There’s something really special about being able to revisit old family memories.

Whether it’s a childhood birthday, a family vacation, holiday footage, or everyday moments captured on VHS, VHS-C, Hi8mm, miniDV, or DVD, getting those videos digitized is a huge first step. But once you have the digital files, the next question is often:

Now what do I do with them?

A lot of people want a simple, affordable way to store their digitized home videos somewhere safe and easy to access — without needing to be especially tech-savvy. One of the easiest ways to do that is by uploading them privately to YouTube.

I recently created a step-by-step video tutorial that walks through exactly how to do that.

Why use YouTube for old home videos?

If your tapes have already been digitized, YouTube can be a surprisingly useful option for long-term access and private family sharing.

Uploading your videos to YouTube can help you:

  • keep your family videos accessible in the cloud
  • privately share them with loved ones near or far
  • organize them with titles, descriptions, chapters, and playlists
  • watch them easily on computers, phones, tablets, or smart TVs
  • avoid relying on only one hard drive or device

For many families, this is a simple and cost-efficient way to make sure those memories stay easy to find and enjoy.

What the tutorial covers

In this video, I walk through:

  • how to download your digitized home video files
  • how to upload them to YouTube
  • how to title and describe them clearly
  • how to add chapters so moments are easier to find later
  • how to organize videos into playlists
  • the difference between Private and Unlisted
  • how to re-download your uploaded file later if needed

The goal of this tutorial is to make the process feel approachable, even if you don’t use YouTube often.

Private vs. Unlisted: an important step

One of the most important parts of uploading family videos to YouTube is choosing the right visibility setting.

If you want the most control, Private is usually the best option. That gives you more control over exactly who can access the video.

If you choose Unlisted, anyone with the link can watch it, which can still be useful in some cases, but it offers less privacy.

That part of the process can feel confusing at first, so I made sure to explain it clearly in the tutorial.

A helpful next step after digitizing your tapes

Digitizing your old tapes is only part of the preservation process. It’s also important to think about how you want to store, organize, and back them up afterward.

Uploading your digitized home videos to YouTube can be a great option if you want:

  • easier access from different devices
  • a simple way to share footage with family
  • a private online viewing option
  • another layer of backup beyond your downloaded files

I still recommend keeping your files backed up in at least two places, but using YouTube as part of your storage and sharing workflow can be a great solution.
